We’re just back from the beach, where we tried to catch some of the glowing red tide that people were so excited about last night. Unfortunately we’d missed it at it peak, but I got a few general shots of how it looked.
These were all from La Jolla Shores, where the glow of streetlights and ambient glow from houses all around didn’t help see the subtle effects. There actually is a tiny little blue shimmer in this one, in the wave breaking towards the left of the frame.
And then there was this one with no glowing waves at all, but I liked the neat effects of a lens left open for 30 seconds…
…another one with a subtle glow…
…and a final one.
Check out the photo from last night in a local news story [ here ]. What we saw tonight was cool, but I’m sorry I couldn’t make it out to the water last night.
I would have loved to see this in person, sounds so magical – glowing waves.
Thanks for sharing. Very nice, even though you missed the peak. I recall that very thing about 1990, which was just as odd for a land-dweller like me as the Pacific itself!
I miss frequent Fri dinners w/ my friends (who also moved) above the La Jolla Cove…
Cool! At least you got to see some of it. We’ve heard from friends who walk their dogs on the beach at night that Carmel Beach gets bioluminescence from time to time – a really good beach for this kind of thing, b/c there are so few lights around. I’ve asked them to give me a call whenever they see it. So, far no call in 3 years’ time. I didn’t know it had to do with red tide.
Fireflies have mesmerized me, and I can only imagine how it would be to sit and watch those glowing waves. Glad you got to the beach to see, record and share.
Thanks for the link: very sci-fi-ey. I much prefer your subtler version.
I remember bio-luminescent tides coming to Black’s Beach. It made the sand light up, not just the water. My first experience with them, and one of the absolute highlights of my time at UCSD. I hadn’t thought about it in a while, but those nights are just about my best memories of San Diego.
Wow, that’s just amazing. Makes me wish I lived closer to the beach. Thanks for the photos!
We went to La Jolla last night (10-1-2011) and the waves were entrancing. I have never seen anything like it in my life. i went into the water and when you splash the water on yourself its like electric blue sparkles all over you. When the water hots the rocks is like a neon blue spash that glows from watching it from the La Jolla cliffs. Simply amazing!!!
Although you missed the peak, you certainly didn’t miss out on great shots! The second is so captivating I had to open it up and soak it in. Beautiful!
I really enjoyed these pics. Very Rothko-esque, you know. 🙂
This must have been amazing to see…and you got some great pictures.
